After a 22‐day journey across the Atlantic Ocean and through the St. Lawrence Seaway,
INTRO’s first shipment of Mass Timber has safely arrived at the Port of Cleveland (Port). The Mass Timber, which is manufactured by Austrian‐based Binderholz GmbH, was transported by the Spliethoff Group (Spliethoff). Spliethoff is the Port’s vessel partner that provides a vital direct shipping option from Europe to Cleveland.
“The arrival of our first shipment of Mass Timber is a momentous day for everyone
involved in INTRO”, said Mark Bell, CEO of Harbor Bay Real Estate Advisors (Harbor Bay). “To be receiving this shipment required an unprecedented level of commitment by the Port of Cleveland and so many of our partners during such challenging times. This first shipment exemplifies the true grit and effort of all partners that are located throughout the United States, Canada, and Austria.”
Currently under construction, INTRO is located at the corner of West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue, adjacent to the historic West Side Market in Cleveland, Ohio. INTRO will be predominately constructed using Mass Timber and upon completion, it will be the tallest Mass Timber building in the United States. Mass Timber is solid or engineered wood, such as cross‐laminated timber and glue‐laminated timber, which is used for the primary loadbearing structures. The use of Mass Timber is a new construction method within the City of Cleveland, State of Ohio, and for most of the United States.
“INTRO’s use of introducing Mass Timber into construction creates an opportunity to showcase Ohio’s proud and longstanding Forest Product Industry” said Brad Perkins, Executive Director of the Ohio Forestry Association. “Our association and members are dedicated to strengthening and expanding the wood products industry for the benefit of Ohio companies, employees, customers, landowners, and the public. The use of Forest Products through innovative and sustainable methods, creates limitless opportunities for the growth of our Industry.”
Upon completion in the first quarter of 2022, the $144 million INTRO Development will rise to become a 9‐story (115’) building comprising of approximately 505,000 total square feet (SF), including 298 residential apartments, 35,000 SF of retail, 12,000 SF of event space, one acre of public “greenspace”, and a two‐story 342‐space underground parking garage in the west side Cleveland neighborhood known as Ohio City. Mass Timber assembly will commence shortly after Thanksgiving and is scheduled to be completed by the Summer of 2021. The Mass Timber will be sequenced for installation from the Port of Cleveland.
