A Conversation with Margy Judd, President, Executive Arrangements
Like millions of small businesses, COVID-19 made 2020 a challenging year for my company, but it also created opportunities. During a “normal” year, Executive Arrangements hosts more than 100 candidates, who spend a day or two in our town as they consider a job offer that would require a relocation here. For 41 years, EA has been the secret weapon of dozens of companies in NE Ohio, creating one-of-a-kind immersions for the recruit and their family to experience first hand what living in Cleveland or Akron could be like based on their specific interests and needs.
When the pandemic shut down our country in March, my creative staff of 14 immediately began brainstorming ways EA could still woo out-of-towners, virtually. Using PPP money, we invested heavily in cloud based tools that showcase our region’s livability, then began training our staff in these new skills.
Thankfully, because our client base is heavily weighted in the healthcare economy, many of our orientations are back to in-person outings, as hospital workers were among the first to be vaccinated. But the tools we created to augment our services now offer a cost effective way for companies to woo out of town talent to our region. And, the highly customized Google My Maps and NE Ohio portal provide rich resources for our in-person clients to explore after their Discover Cleveland day.
Knowing that masks and social distancing could be part of our lives for a year or two to come I am grateful that smart, flexible, hardworking people I hired years ago, for a completely different job description, stepped up to the plate to help us re-imagine how we could continue to be part of our client’s talent attraction strategy and in turn helped us create a new version of our company.
